Live Writer Tagging Feature in BlogEngine.NET

This week, the Live Writer team released the first release candidate for Live Writer 2009.  The latest version has continue to build on the betas from the fall and is just a really nice blogging tool.  The update has a new look and bunch of new stuff you can read about other places, but I wanted to write about the new server-side tagging feature that is available for the BlogEngine.NET bloggers using 1.4.5.9 and beyond.

tags When using the newest Live Writer and a fairly current build of BlogEngine.NET you will get a new Tags entry box right next to the categories drop down.  While BlogEngine.NET users have always been able to enter tags in Live Writer using the Keywords box, the new box does a lookup as you type so you can see the tags you’ve already entered and select them from a list. Our complete tag list button is still available for viewing all your tags, but this new list is pretty handy.

tagsinaction I really like the way the Live Writer team is pushing the API and allowing developers to enhance the Live Writer experience. If the cool stuff Live Writer allows your favorite blog software to do isn’t enough, there are 100s of plug ins that add even more functionality. I look forward to seeing what new functionality they offer us next.

Hi!
I've just downloaded the latest version of WLW (14.0.8050.1202), but running it against my blog (1.4.5.13) I cannot see the new tags entry feature. Is there any step I'm missing? I'm using the spanish version of WLW, could it have something to do?

Thanks!

Hi Mack,

I don't think you are missing anything.  My WLW version is 14.0.8050.1202 en.  I'm not sure if there is anything different in the Spanish version of WLW, but I'd suggest making sure you have the updated wlwmanifest.xml in the root of your blog and to do an update of your blog information in WLW.

Good luck.

Hi Al!

Solved, i was missing the updated wlwmanifest.xml in the root dir. I copied it, updated the account info and everything is working perfectly.
Thank you very much and keep up the good work!

Hi again Al,

After playing a bit with the new version, I see that it continues showing a problem reported in the forums and the issue tracker. After publishing, the blog shows the entry twice, although in fact there is only one file stored. Restaring the blog app seems to "repair" the problem. Have you experienced this?

Best regards,

macK

MacK,

I'm sorry to report that I haven't experienced this issue, but I will spend some time trying to replicate it before 1.5 is released.

Al,

Thanks for your attention. By the way, if I can help with the spahish translation of BE just tell me. I have done some previous translation works, such as Winmerge (winmerge.org). I would like to return some of the benefits I'm getting from your hard work

Hi Al,

I am running BlogEngine.NET 1.4.5.0.  (just downloaded from CodePlex).

I do not see the Tags feature in Windows Live Writer (14.0.8050.1202).

You wrote about an 'updated' wlwmanifest.xml file...where is this obtained?

All the best,

John

John,

You'll need to get the latest code from the source code tab, 1.4.5.13, as of today.  You'll need more than just the wlwmanifest.xml file.  You'll need to do a full update to get the feature.

Good luck,

Al

Al,

Thank you.
I did download and recompile the source code 1.4.5.13. (just saw the 1.4.5.14 was uploaded this morning.)

Uploaded the new code 1.4.5.13 and now the blog loads much faster than 1.4.5.0...based on my experience...is this because of the new code being compiled in Visual Studio 2008 perhaps?

My backup efforts were not perfect.
I backed up my css style...but did not backup my User.xml, Settings.xml, etc....I need to better understand which files are the key backup files for future upgrades.

I believe that your blogging software is excellent, I hope that you continue to grow and take on more customers' sites and challenge Wordpress.  I first tried Wordpress and found it to be really sharp.  One thing that I could not do with Wordpress was post a post with images....after searching for a while on their forums and not resolving this, I searched for .Net blogging software (I code in VB.Net) and found BlogEngine.  I downloaded and uploaded it to my site and immediately was able to work with it.  Your 'how-to upload BlogEngine' screencast was very helpful.  Also, your post about Windows Live Writer was great...that makes blogging very easy and powerful.

The themes that were posted on Dec 12...most of them did not work with 1.4.5.0 but now do work with 1.4.5.13.

You and Mads and your colleagues are doing great...continue to make great builds and post a new 1.5 (when you are ready) so more new users will be very pleasantly surprised with your product.

All the best,

John from Chester Springs, PA
